Who are you?

I’m Zoë, an independent online A-Level Biology and A-Level Chemistry tutor. I have studied science (particularly biosciences) to PhD level, and have over 1900 hours of tutoring experience. It’s rewarding to see students find enjoyment in science and reach their potential.

I currently tutor the following specifications:
- A-Level Biology: AQA, OCR A, Edexcel Salters-Nuffield
- A-Level Chemistry: AQA, OCR A
What qualifies you to be a tutor?
I am committed to providing safe and valuable tuition. I am a bioscientist with the following qualifications:
- PhD Nutritional Sciences, University of Nottingham
- MRes Biosciences, University of Nottingham
- BSc Animal Science, University of Nottingham
- Top grades in biology, chemistry and maths at A-Level and GCSE
- Member of The Tutors’ Association
- Enhanced DBS check

I have contributed to published research papers and have real life research experience. My PhD was based on lipid metabolism in the liver and enabled me to learn in depth about molecular biology and nutritional biochemistry. Other projects I have been involved with include developing computer vision technology to track animal behaviour. I have varied knowledge of what it’s like to actually work in science, and lots of practical experience. I still work in a lab environment as a senior laboratory technician and I have carried out many of the biology and chemistry techniques that you learn about at A-level (e.g. infrared spectroscopy and PCR).
If you are interested in my research, you can find all the papers I have contributed to here.
What do you charge?
From September 2025 my one-to-one tutorials will be £38/hr on a weekly basis. This includes setting and marking of questions each week if this is something you would like to engage with.
Please note that I only take UK based students who are willing to commit to tuition every week during term time (unless there is an occasional exceptional circumstance e.g. a school trip). I do not do fortnightly, monthly, or any other combination other than weekly.
What do you do in the tutorials?
The sessions take place over Zoom, therefore access to a laptop, tablet, or PC with a working camera and microphone is essential. Normally I go through a topic using a virtual whiteboard and my hand drawn diagrams. I can go at whatever pace the individual tutee is comfortable with. We also spend time going through some past exam questions to get you used to applying your knowledge and recognising what mark schemes are after. I can set some questions for you to do in between sessions to keep you motivated. However I am very flexible with what content we cover and will work with you to make the sessions as beneficial as possible. I am very friendly, relaxed and enthusiastic, and will do my best to support you. As an introvert myself I know that one-to-one lessons might seem intimidating, but you might be surprised how much it boosts your confidence! I offer a free introductory chat so you can meet me first with no pressure or obligation.
