What is included in the complete Biology notes?

Each complete set includes:

  • Coverage of the Year 12 and Year 13 content for the selected exam board.
  • A set of notes called “data and evaluation” covering skills associated with presenting data, calculations, statistics, and evaluating data.
  • Clear explanations of the knowledge and processes students need to understand.
  • Hand-drawn diagrams to support visual learning.
  • Key terminology selected with exam-board wording and mark schemes in mind.
  • Notes organised by the topics or modules used by the relevant specification.
  • Downloadable PDF files that can be viewed digitally or printed for personal use.

These are revision notes rather than a bank of exam questions. They are designed to make the specification easier to understand and revisit, then to be used alongside active recall and past-paper practice.

Why use specification-matched notes?

Biology courses overlap, but the content, organisation and wording are not identical across AQA, OCR A and Edexcel Biology A. Using notes written for your own exam board helps you follow the correct specification and focus on the terminology relevant to your course.

Every summer, I review the most recently released exam papers and mark schemes. They can reveal useful patterns in how familiar content is assessed and which details are needed for particular marking points. I use that evidence to clarify or extend the notes where appropriate.

No revision resource can predict exam questions or replace active practice. The notes are intended to provide a strong, well-organised foundation for retrieval practice, flashcards and exam questions.

How to use the notes effectively

Reading notes is useful for building understanding, but the strongest revision is active. A good routine is to:

  1. Choose a short section and read it carefully. Make sure you understand the science.
  2. Close the notes and retrieve the information from memory using blurting, flashcards or a blank diagram.
  3. Reopen the notes to identify gaps and correct mistakes.
  4. Answer exam questions on the same content.
  5. Use the mark scheme to check your have used the correct precision in your terminology and haven’t missed out key points.

You can also annotate the PDFs, bring questions from them to lessons or tutoring sessions, and revisit weaker topics throughout Year 12 and Year 13.

Who creates the notes?

I’m Dr Zoë Huggett, an independent online A-level Biology and Chemistry tutor. I have a PhD in Nutritional Sciences, an MRes in Biosciences and a BSc in Animal Science, all from the University of Nottingham.

I have more than six years of tutoring experience and have delivered more than 2,000 hours of one-to-one tuition. I am also a member of The Tutors’ Association. My work with A-level students helps me see where explanations are often unclear, which misconceptions recur and where students need more precise biological language.

I write and draw the notes myself, using the published exam-board specifications, papers and mark schemes to guide the content. The resources are independently produced and are not endorsed by AQA, OCR or Pearson Edexcel.
